Sue Work, our latest ‘Featured Pointster,’ is one of those people you meet for the first time and feel like you’ve known forever. It’s amazing to think she has only worked at Points for 7 months because everyone knows her and she knows her way around the business as if she’s been here for over a decade. Her extremely diverse skill set makes her an ideal B.I. Developer where she is associated with numerous projects at once. An avid cyclist and people person, let’s meet Sue!
What is your role at Points?
I am a Business Intelligence (BI) Developer – our team works with the company’s data in various database platforms and we produce reports that empower our co-workers to do their jobs well. I also support our internal business people (especially Finance, Risk, and Marketing) who utilize the data that we provide.
What is your hobby?
I love to cycle (road biking) and have done trips in Italy (Venice to Florence), Ontario (of course!), and all over Oregon (where I used to live). 2014 will bring my 5th Cycle Oregon trip – a week long ride in Sept, which travels the beautiful back roads of Oregon. Cycle Oregon is in Sept, so that will keep me busy all summer, training and getting ready for mountain roads and 80 mile days…
What is one thing you cannot live without?
My wife, and my friends and family. People rock.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Points?
Points is a combination of a lot of fantastic elements – it is a small company that is growing, but retains the friendliness and informality of a small shop; it is a company where treating employees very well, and having fun is seen as important (beer cart!); it is a company with very high standards and where everyone does their best and really wants to excel; it is a leading edge technology company which explores and embraces new directions, and spends time and money to educate us (or to allow us to educate ourselves); it is a financially successful company – doing very well year over year. Is that too many favourite things?
Are there any projects you’re working on right now that you can tell us about?
BI is integrating the data from new Points products (Mobile Buy, Elite) into our existing data and reporting infrastructure. We are always trying to do things in smarter and better ways, and that is leading to some interesting problems to solve.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island with a DVD player (that’s right, no wifi), what three movies would you bring?
The Princess Bride, Bound, & The Philadelphia Story
What’s your favourite place to eat near the Toronto office?
The Queen Mother Cafe. Once you have their Ping Gai, you won’t ever order anything else.
