This week’s featured Pointster is Jeff Byrne who sits on Points’ Loyalty Commerce Platform squad and reps a Product Manager title. He has been with Points since graduating university six years ago. He’s a sports fan, an active Summer Fun participant, and enjoys a night in playing board games with friends. But don’t be fooled; he claims that board games are anything but quiet and has a scar to prove it. Intrigued? Read on to hear from Jeff.
What is the top item on your bucketlist?
To visit Machu Picchu in Peru. I’ve never traveled outside of North America but the pictures I’ve seen of Machu Picchu are stunning and think it would definitely be worth the trek.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island, what three movies would you bring?
BASEketball, Good Will Hunting, and WALL-E.
If you could eat or drink one thing endlessly without any negative consequences, what would it be?
Gotta go with sushi for this one. Then I could finally get my money’s worth on all-you-can-eat sushi without needing to take a nap!
If you could see one concert, what would it be?
My musical tastes don’t make sense to anyone (myself included…) but if I could see any concert, it would be Meat Loaf.
What’s your favourite way to spend a Friday night?
Spending a night in with a few close friends, cold drinks and board games.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever done with loyalty points/miles?
I won Choice Privileges rewards at our company Christmas party a few years ago and used them to book hotels for a road trip. I traveled with friends to catch baseball games in Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
Where’s your favourite place to eat near the Toronto office?
I’d have to go with La Carnita. If you’re in the mood for some quality Mexican cuisine just a short walk from the office, there’s no better place to go.
What three unique things would we find on your desk right now?
Robots, Nerf guns, and a Toronto Maple Leafs flag.
Tell us something about yourself that would surprise people.
I have a scar from my elementary school chess club. A friend was sliding a chess board across the table and it caught air and hit me with a corner right between the eyes. I’m just glad it wasn’t an inch to the left or right!
What is the best trip you’ve ever taken?
I traveled to Vancouver over the holidays last year to visit my sister. It was my first time visiting the West Coast. Despite the fact that it snowed in my first few days there (…they blamed me for bringing the weather from Ontario) it was beautiful! I’m already planning my next trip back.
What one person from the past or present would you like to have dinner with, and why?
Jim Pappin, the last person to score a Stanley Cup winning goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs back in 1967. Sure, I could say someone like Gandhi, but he wouldn’t know the first thing about how seriously we take hockey in this city, would he?
What’s your favourite thing about working at Points?
The Summer Fun activities we do every year. Last year, I participated in a dozen or so different events that various people throughout Points helped to organize.
Are there any projects you’re working on right now that you can tell us about?
We’re in the process of building a feature to augment the data we receive which ensures that loyalty program members are presented with the relevant offer to them at that point in time.
Working with fantastic people is just one perk of joining Points. Learn more about our company culture and browse our open roles.
