Meet Alan, our speed-seeking Director of IT Operations. Despite only being part of the Points team for two and a half years, Alan’s charm and wit has become legendary company-wide. When he’s not holding down the fort in our IT department, he gets his thrills riding one of his three motorcycles on the street or in the woods.
Luckily for us, a recent run-in with an off-ramp slowed him down enough for me to catch up and ask him some questions:
What is the top item on your bucket-list?
To drive a lap of the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife race track in a Porsche 911.
If you could eat or drink one thing endlessly without any negative consequences, what would it be?
Beer and potatoes.
If you could see one concert, what would it be?
What’s your favourite way to spend a Friday night?
Hanging out and having a beer with friends in a small club with a great band playing.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever done with loyalty points/miles?
My wife and I honeymooned at a great all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean. Flights and resort were all paid for with Aeroplan miles.
What does a day in your life at Points look like for you?
Wake up, check phone, answer emails, ride the rocket to the office, email, meetings, pleadings, emails, lunch, contracts, ticket approvals, crisis management, meetings, everyone goes home and finally I get some real work done.
What’s your favourite place to eat near the Toronto office?
There are so many good lunch spots near the office. Burger Priest and TLP are two of my favourites.
What three unique things would we find on your desk right now?
Caution tape, Polysporin, and 24″ bolt cutters.
What is your hobby (or hobbies)?
I play football (soccer!), and I love riding motorcycles. Hobbies are those things that cause you to suffer serious injuries, right? I used to race karts too, but haven’t raced competitively since I had a big crash about 12 years ago.
I try to get out to as many music shows as I can.
What is the best trip you’ve ever taken?
I spent three weeks hanging out in Cairo and Dahab, Egypt in August 1990. I arrived in Egypt just a week after Iraq invaded Kuwait.
What one person from the past or present would you like to have dinner with, and why?
My uncle Joe, because we never met.
You can read more about him here.
What are your words to live by?
Life is good! (Thanks Dave)
What’s your favourite thing about working at Points?
The people. It’s always the people. Collectively the people create the culture and when everyone pulls in the same direction, we can accomplish so much more together.
We know that it’s our wonderfully weird and talented people that make Points such a special place to work. And we’re always looking for the best and brightest to join our team – click here to find out more about working at Points.
