Today marks International Women’s Day, a day for each one of us – women and men – to join forces and help forge a better working world, a more gender inclusive world. Today also serves as an important reminder that gender parity is not yet a universal reality, and that action is still needed around the world to strive for progress.
This year’s theme, #BeBoldForChange, calls on us to take initiative, to be a leader in our own spheres of influence and spark change for gender equity.
At Points, we actively endorse a more diverse, equitable and inclusive environment that attracts and retains great people. As a technology company, we take the underrepresentation of women in the industry seriously. In fact, a report by the U.S. Department of Commerce tells us that while woman make up half of the workforce, only 25% fill jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) industries. That’s quite the disparity.
In our efforts to support women in the workplace, we are so proud to have recently been named a Top Workplace for Women by Great Place to Work Canada, an honour we don’t take lightly. We’ve set up programs like flexible work hours, maternity and parental support, and company-sponsored events that encourage strong relationships for women across departments. We are also involved in the Pyladies community, an international mentorship group with a focus on helping more women become active participants and leaders in the Python open-source community.
We’ve worked hard to create a strong culture of equality but we know that as a company and as an industry, we still need to be a vehicle for change.
Today, we celebrate unity, reflection, advocacy and action and will continue to #BeBoldForChange.
